Muchelney to Long Load

from Westover Bridge, Muchelney along the River Yeo to Long Load

Directions for this walk are extremely simple. The walk starts near the church at Muchelney and takes the Drayton Road until the Westover Bridge. Do not cross the bridge, but take the footpath to the right. Follow this footpath keeping on the south side of both rivers until Load Bridge is reached, some five and a half miles further on. Load Bridge has traffic lights and cannot be missed, even in the dark. Turn right, this is Long Load, and head towards Martock, Just less than half a mile on the right is the Crown Inn. This is the Nippy Bus pick up point.

The walk can be achieved in two and three quarter hours, but allow three and a half plus to cater for the slowest and the pit stops along the way. The views are extensive, and on a bright summers day, the temptation will be to linger. Otters, Swans, Heron and Kingfishers are known to frequent this area. The walk has a number of stiles, Bristol and Kissing gates. 'Wellies' are advised if recent days have had heavy rain.
