Nippy Bus Walks in the South Petherton Area Throughout the year South Petherton Walking Group will be running mid week Nippy Bus Walks in association with our local Nippy Bus Service. Nippy Bus Walks will appear on ' Our Next Walk' page regularly, each walk is limited to fourteen passengers (Until Nippy get a bigger Bus!). Previous day notice is required by the Bus Operators, therefore Booking is required. The current Nippy Bus fare each way is £3.25 Adults, £1.80 Children and bus pass holders go free. A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this almost four and a half mile near circular walk through West Chinnock and Chiselborough. Bus departs South Petherton about 10.15am, arrives at the Byme Bridge, Monarchs Way footpath at 10.30am. Walk to Chiselborough by way of West Chinnock stopping at two Pubs for coffee or general watering or a light lunch. The Nippy Bus will pick up walkers at Chiselborough and return to South Petherton ealrly afternoon. The walk can be achieved in two and a quarter hours, but allow three plus to cater for the slowest and the pit stops along the way. A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this magnificent three and a half mile walk alongside the renowned River Parret. The Swans are back, Kingfishers and Herons are on the river, and recent sightings of Otter have been reported. Bus departs South Petherton about 10.15am, arrives at footpath at 10.30am. Walk to Mulchelney and the School Farm Tea Shop for tea, coffee or a light lunch, where the Nippy Bus will pick up walkers and return to South Petherton. A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this wild and interesting three and a half mile walk alongside the withy fields of Kingsbury Episcopi. If you don’t mind getting wet, a good day to go is when it is grey, overcast and there is a light drizzle. Bus departs South Petherton about 10.15am, arrives at footpath at 10.30am. Walk to Stembridge and The Rusty Axe for tea, coffee, lunch or whatever where the Nippy Bus will pick up walkers and return to South Petherton. A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this five and a half mile walk through rich open countryside in view of Burrough Hill. A large herd of about 200 inquisitive cows frequent these pastures and care needs to be taken, especially if you have a dog. The path is fairly level but somewhat rough going. Two short sections of the footpath are blocked and one gate difficult to pass. There is a mixture of Stiles, Kissing,and Bristol Gates and a small wooden foot bridge. Included is short walk alongside the old Westport Canal which is crossed via a gated stone bridge. There is a small amount of road walking and sections can be extremely muddy after heavy rainfall. A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this four mile walk to Burrow Hill Cider Farm. In season (September/October/November) watch apples being pressed in historic surroundings, and maybe sample some of the goodies. Walk to a local pub, The Rusty Axe in Stembridge, for lunch before catching a Nippy Bus back to South Petherton or Yeovil. Bus connections are available from Yeovil. Walking is fairly level and there are some stiles and farm gates to negotiate. Mainly field foot paths and sections of country lanes. Care needs to be taken on the more busy country roads. Bus departs Yeovil Bus Station at 9.00am, walk starts at South Petherton 10.45 am. Sections can be extremely muddy after heavy rainfall. A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this, just over, four-mile walk that takes in a large section of the disused Westport Canal. The route takes you along the edge of the old canal where it is not difficult to imagine horses, barges and bargemen plying their trade in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds. Field footpaths then lead to The Smokery for lunch or light refreshments. There is a mixture of Stiles, Kissing,and Bristol Gates. There is a small amount of road walking and sections can be extremely muddy after heavy rainfall. Westover Bridge, Muchelney along the River Yeo to Long Load A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this, just over six-mile walk that takes in parts of the River Parrett and River Yeo. The route is a river walk that takes you though the levels and farmland that has been worked since the Middle Ages. This is level, relatively easy, walking, There is a mixture of Stiles, Kissing, and mainly Bristol Gates. Road walking is kept to a minimum. Otters, Swans, Heron and Kingfishers are known to frequent this area. Sections can be extremely muddy after heavy rainfall. The Walk finishes at the Crown Inn, Long Load where the local Nippy Bus will pick up and transport walkers back to South Petherton. |
