South Petherton and Moor
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.

Two and a half/Three miles. At a brisk pace this walk can be completed in just over an hour. At a leisurely pace, allowing for dogs, conversation and admiring the view (we will be walking across one of the highest points in South Petherton) allow about one and a half hours.

Stembridge and Mid Lambrook
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.

Aproximately Six Miles. At a brisk pace this walk can be completed in just over two hours. At a leisurely pace, allowing for dogs, cattle, sheep and maybe some deer, conversation, the view, and a pub or two, allow about three hours plus. This is one of the prettiest 'orchard' walks in the area.

Cripple and Hallett's Hill
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.
 
Approximately three and a half miles. Can be completed in just over an hour and a half, at a leisurely pace allow two and a half hours. Ideal for the dog, but care must be taken with cattle, horses and sheep.
 
Two Events on Thursday 1st May 2008
Leave the car at the bottom of the hill, and walk up for a further bit of madness. The Morris Men are dancing on Ham Hill as the day breaks. Come and join them just before dawn. There is a moderately priced full breakfast (and a pint if you really need it!) at the Half Moon afterwards.

Approximately 4 miles of gentle gradients, Mostly field footpaths with some village pavements and two short sections of 'busy' road walking. There are a number of stiles, some quite difficult to negotiate and several farm gates. Footpaths leading to the river can get very muddy, especially in winter of after heavy rain.
 
Tuesday 6th May 2008 - Join Stoke Walking Group.
Ham Hill, Witcombe Valley, Blue Bell Wood and Lady's Walk
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at the Sea Wall.
(Known locally as the 'Sea Wall', it is found on Stoke High St, about 50yds on the Montacute side of Bonnie Lane.) 
 
From the Sea Wall the walk follows the path to the top of Ham Hill then across the fields to the top of Witcombe Valley. We continue down the hill to Montacute along the Ladies Walk path through beautiful bluebell woods. The path then leads us though the grounds of the old Priory around St Michaels Hill, into Hedgecock Wood, along the top path of the wood to The Prnce of Wales for lunch. After lunch we will make our own way down the hill to the Sea Wall.

Behind Berry - Somerton
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at Somerton Public Library.
A really good place to start. This is a short walk for those who are not familiar with walking, or would just like a little exercise.

Approximately 1.5 miles - No Stiles.
Town paths and sections along unsurfaced paths (can be muddy). One gentle descent, one short ascent up some steps.

The Village footpath circular walk takes place on the first Sunday of each month throughout the year. Each monthly walk has a different leader, a different route and lasts approximately an hour and a half, back just in time for lunch.

Tuesday 3rd June 2008 - Join Stoke Walking Group
Stoke sub Hamdon - Norton Sub Hamdon - Ham Hill
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at the Sea Wall.
(Known locally as the 'Sea Wall', it is found on Stoke High St, about 50yds on the Montacute side of Bonnie Lane.) 

From the Sea Wall, walk to Norton sub Hamdon, Greenhams Cross and up Grintley Lane. Then follow the lane down, leading to Bagnell Farm. Next through High Wood and back through Norton Covert to Ham Hill for lunch at the Prince of Wales.
Approx 5 miles at a gentle pace.

Approximately 3 miles, mostly field footpaths through open farmland. There are a number of stiles, some quite difficult to negotiate and several 'Bristol' farm gates. Sections can be quite muddy after heavy rainfall. Some paths may be overgrown.

Barcroft Hall Awareness Day
PLEASE NOTE THE START TIME.
Meet at 1.30pm - Start at Prigg Lane Long Stay Car Park
Finish at Barcroft Hall. (Walking back to Prigg Lane via North Street)
This is a gentle under three mile, albeit somewhat overgrown walk ,with four of five styles and kissing gates, finishing at Barcroft Hall. The walk is about an hour and a quarter, and the promise of tea, coffee or cake at the end will be too much to miss.

Muchelney Nippy Bus Walk

Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.

A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this magnificent walk alongside the renowned River Parret. Starting at Thorney Bridge walking along the River Parrett and finishing in Muchelney for tea or coffee, before catching the Bus back to South Petherton.
 
We are required to advise Nippy of numbers travelling.
Please email info@southpethertonwalkinggroup.org at least 24 hours in advance if you would like to be included. Car share may be possible for those who cannot find a seat on the bus.
Adult fares are £3.25 each way, Bus passes do apply.
 
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.

Approximately 4.75.miles - Mostly farm tracks and pretty country lanes. There are no climbing Stiles, only one Slab Stile and a number of Gates. While fairly level and easy going there are two challenging banks which require some agility and reasonable fitness to negotiate At one point the A303 has to be crossed and extreme care must be taken as traffic on this road moves extremely fast.

Meet at 10.30pm - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.
A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this almost four and a half mile near circular walk through West Chinnock and Chiselborough. Bus departs South Petherton about 10.30am, arrives at the Byme Bridge, Monarchs Way footpath at 10.45am. Walk to Chiselborough by way of West Chinnock stopping at two Pubs for coffee or general watering or a light lunch. The Nippy Bus will pick up walkers at Chiselborough and return to South Petherton ealrly afternoon. The walk can be achieved in two and a quarter hours, but allow three plus to cater for the slowest and the pit stops along the way. 
 
Boots always advisable, wellies if the previous days have been wet.
 
We are required to advise Nippy of numbers travelling.

Thursday 26th June 2008 - Evening Walk
Netherfield Farm
Meet at 7.30pm - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.
 
About an hour and a quarter walking. Approximately 3.25 miles, mostly field footpaths through open farmland and some road walking. There are five stiles, two quite difficult to negotiate, one slab stile and several farm, kissing and Bristol gates. Sections can be quite muddy after heavy rainfall. Some paths may be overgrown but most have been recently topped. The walk will be punctuated by a refreshment visit to the Rose and Crown at East Lambrook.

We will walk up Ham Hill, around the Northern Ramparts and on to the Stone Carvings, continuing through the fields following the perimeter of the Hill Fort to the top of Witcombe Valley, through Fariyland and back to the Prince of Wales for lunch.

If you don’t mind getting wet, a good day to go is when it is grey, overcast and there is a light drizzle. Bus departs South Petherton about 10.20am, arrives at footpath at 10.40am. Walk to Stembridge and The Rusty Axe for tea, coffee, lunch or whatever where the Nippy Bus will pick up walkers and return to South Petherton.
(Take advantage - Bus Passes are accepted. The bus has to be booked, so please advise Ian at(01460) 241364 or info@southpethertonwalkinggroup.org, the evening before if you are coming.

There is plenty of parking at the pub, but please try and car share.

Join Stoke Walking Group and walk along the lanes and footpaths to Holywell and then on to North Coker Mill via Skinners Hill Farm. Continue through Coker Court Park and Sleight Plantation and then along the lane to see the stunning views of Hardington Moor Nature Reserve. Returning through fields, lane and footpath to the Royal George. This walk is about 4 miles long and there are 6 stiles. Come and join us, this is a friendly group and always pleased to see new faces. Walking is at a gentle pace, well Well behaved dogs welcome.

The Swans are back, Kingfishers and Herons are on the river, and recent sightings of Otter have been reported. Bus departs South Petherton about 10.15am, arrives at footpath at 10.30am. Walk to Mulchelney and the School Farm Tea Shop for tea, coffee or a light lunch, where the Nippy Bus will pick up walkers and return to South Petherton.

Approximately 4.2.miles - Stopping off at The Rose and Crown, East Lambrook,
Mostly farm footpaths. There are a dozen or more climbing Stiles, and a number of Kissing and Bristol Gates. While fairly level and easy going there is one (sometimes very muddy) ditch to be negotiated along the way. Horses, Cattle and Sheep may almost certainly be encountered en route.

Join Stoke Walking Group.
We will walk along footpaths around Ham Hill to Little Norton and then across the fields to Pitt Pond. Pitt Pond used to be the boating lake for Montacute House and it has been lovingly restored over the years since the end of the 1960’s. It is a little gem in our area and not normally open to the public. Thank you to Jack Parker for allowing this visit. We will walk back along the lane and by footpaths to Stoke or a drink at the Fleur de Lis.
Come and join us, this is a friendly group and always pleased to see new faces. The walk is approximately 5 miles, and walked at a gentle pace.

Stoke - Norton sub Hamdon - Stoke
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at the Sea Wall.
(Known locally as the 'Sea Wall', it is found on Stoke High St, about 50yds on the Montacute side of Bonnie Lane.) 
Join Stoke Walking Group.

We will walk across the fields and footpaths to Norton Sub Hamdon and then along the Monarchs Way to Chiselborough, where we will proceed to Balham Hill. You can walk to the top of the hill and take in the superb views or skirt around the side of the hill where the views of Ham Hill are just as good. We will then walk back along the Parret Trail to Norton for lunch at the Lord Nelson, and then back to Stoke.
Come and join us, this is a friendly group and always pleased to see new faces. The walk is approximately 5 miles, and walked at a gentle pace.

Meet 2.15pm for 2.30pm start at the Village Hall.
To be followed by a delicious afternoon tea.

This is a social event with a modicum of exercise
The walk is approximately 2.5 miles, includes three stiles, some uneven
ground and one short, steep descent.

Barrington to Hambridge Nippy Bus Walk
Meet at 10.15am - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane 'Long Stay' Car Park.
Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.

A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this five and a half mile walk through rich open countryside in view of Burrow Hill. A large herd of about 200 inquisitive cows frequent these pastures and care needs to be taken, especially if you have a dog. The path is fairly level but somewhat rough going. Two short sections of the footpath are blocked and one gate difficult to pass. There is a mixture of Stiles, Kissing,and Bristol Gates and a small wooden foot bridge. Included is short walk alongside the old Westport Canal which is crossed via a gated stone bridge. There is a small amount of road walking and sections can be extremely muddy after heavy rainfall. Obstructions do exist on this path.

Approximately 4.5.miles - Mostly farm foot paths. There are are eight or nine climbing Stiles, and a number of Kissing and Bristol Gates. While fairly level and easy going there some paths are rough under foot. Fields may be extremely muddy after rain, so wellington boots may be a good idea. Horses, Sheep and one very cheeky Donkey, may almost certainly be encountered en route.

Muchelney Nippy Bus Walk
Meet at 10.15am, the Bus leaves promptly - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane 'Long Stay' Car Park. Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.

A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this magnificent three and a half mile walk alongside the renowned River Parret. The Swans are back, Kingfishers and Herons are on the river, and recent sightings of Otter have been reported. Bus departs South Petherton about 10.15am, arrives at footpath at 10.30am. Walk to Mulchelney and the School Farm Tea Shop for tea, coffee or a light lunch, where the Nippy Bus will pick up walkers and return to South Petherton.

We are required to advise Nippy of numbers travelling. Please phone or email the day before if you would like to be included. Car share may be possible for those who cannot find a seat on the bus.
Adult fares are £3.25 each way, Over 60? Free Bus passes do apply.

Westport Canal to The Smokery Nippy Bus Walk
Meet at 10.15am, the Bus leaves promptly - Start and Finish at Prigg Lane 'Long Stay' Car Park. Prigg Lane is opposite South Petherton Library.

A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this, just over, four-mile walk that takes in a large section of the disused Westport Canal. The route takes you along the edge of the old canal where it is not difficult to imagine horses, barges and bargemen plying their trade in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds. Field footpaths then lead to The Smokery for lunch or light refreshments. There is a mixture of Stiles, Kissing,and Bristol Gates. There is a small amount of road walking and sections can be extremely muddy after heavy rainfall. After refreshments the Nippy Bus will collect us around 2.30pm, and return us to South Petherton.

South Petherton Village Circular Walk
Meet at 11.15am - Start and Finish at the Market Square by the Chemist.

The Village footpath circular walk takes place on the first Sunday of each month throughout the year. Each monthly walk has a different leader, a different route and lasts approximately an hour and a half, back just in time for lunch.

Tuesday 7th October 2008 - Join Stoke Walking Group.
Ham Hill, Witcombe Valley, Hedgecock Woods, Ham Hill
Meet at 10.30am - Start and Finish at the Sea Wall.
(Known locally as the 'Sea Wall', it is found on Stoke High St, about 50yds on the Montacute side of Bonnie Lane.)  
We will walk up Ham Hill and then across the fields to the top of Witcombe
Valley. From there to the bottom of St Michael's Hill and on past the Priory
to Montacute, on into the grounds of Montacute house, past the Ice House,
back along Stoke Rd for a short distance, into Hedgecock Woods and to the
Prince of Wales for lunch and then back to Stoke.

Westover Bridge, Muchelney along the River Yeo to Long Load

A maximum of fourteen at a time may join this, just over six-mile walk that takes in parts of the River Parrett and River Yeo. The route is a river walk that takes you though the levels and farmland that has been worked since the Middle Ages. This is level, relatively easy, walking, There is a mixture of Stiles, Kissing, and mainly Bristol Gates. Road walking is kept to a minimum. Otters, Swans, Heron and Kingfishers are known to frequent this area. Sections can be extremely muddy after heavy rainfall. After refreshments the Nippy Bus will collect us around 2.30 pm, and return us to South Petherton.
